How to Help Kids with Moving Near Temecula, Murrieta, Okinawa... Anywhere - PSST: It Helps Adults, Too

We moved many times as a military family: Irvine, CA, to Charlottesville, VA, to Okinawa, Japan, to Oceanside, 29 Palms and to the Murrieta and Temecula areas most recently in 2004.

We had children at various ages at the various moves, and we as adults moved through ages, despite me continuing to claim "29."  Each time, we would settle in, and months would pass, perhaps a year or two, and somewhere in between, each of the family members would get comfortable and even happy.

Early on, I wondered a lot about what it would take to feel happy in our new home town.  Here are the things I came to discover:

3. Finding things we want and need: a rental or purchased home, grocery stores, schools, shopping, malls, sports, music teachers, etc.

2. Making a list of the things the new area has that the child or adult anticipates enjoying: Yes, there are downsides to moving.  But, where our focus goes, our energy flows.  Focus on the one, two or three good things that will be in the new locale: hiking, biking, volleyball, having the working parent home more, having a lower cost of living, and so on.  Write out a list, and when a negative thought enters the picture, say, "No, I won't think about that now!  I'm looking forward to A, B and C!"  If a child starts to mention the negatives, try saying, "Let's worry about that later.  Remember what you're looking forward to?  The hiking, the skiing, being near Disneyland, etc.!  Tell me what you want to do there first!"

1. Finding a friend: This, to me, is the key factor, and, no, you can't make it happen.  All the items in #3 and 2 could be achieved, or may be yet to be discovered, but once a kid or adult finds that one friend in the area, they can get comfortable and happy.

I wish I had realized it when we were doing the moving.  It happened, but I didn't formulate it into an idea, so much.

But helping people buy homes here in the Murrieta and Temecula areas has clarified these thoughts.  It's gratifying to hear a friend tell me that, based on a conversation with me, she found herself telling her daughter who is very upset about their pending move out of town, "It'll just take one friend, honey, and you'll find them!"  And, she further told me, she repeated the idea to herself, reminding herself as well, "It'll just take one friend, and you'll find them there.  It will happen."
